Nimotop (Nimodipine)
Application
Nimotop is a calcium channel blocking agent that is used to reduce the problems caused by lack of oxygen due to bleeding blood vessels in the brain. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Application method
Take this medication exactly as prescribed. If you can not swallow capsules, the liquid inside the capsule can be taken through a feeding tube. For best results this treatment should be started within 4 days after a brain hemorrhage and every 4 hours within 3 weeks.
The mechanism of action
Nimotop belongs to a class of pharmacological agents known as calcium channel blockers.
Missed dose
If you miss a dose of Nimotop then you may take it as soon as you remember and adjust the remaining doses accordingly. However, if it is nearly time for the next dose then you may skip this dose and continue with the regular dosage. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed dose.
Keeping
Keep this medication at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 ° and 30 ° C), away from heat and light. Do not keep it in the bathroom. Keep this medicine same as all other drugs in a place inaccessible for children.
Overdose
Some of the symptoms of an overdose are fainting, loss of consciousness, rapid, slow, or irregular heartbeat, severe dizziness.
Precautionary measures
Discuss with your doctor about any prior medical condition that you may have including allergies to medicines, food or other substances, if you are allergic to any ingredient in Nimotop, if you have liver problems, heart problems (eg, slow heartbeat), shock due to serious heart problems, low blood pressure, fluid in your lungs, or if you have a history of heart attack.
You must not take Nimotop if you are allergic to any ingredient in it.
If you are pregnant or suspect that you are, then stop using Nimotop and contact your doctor immediately.
It is unknown whether Nimotop is secreted in breast milk. Avoid breast feeding while using the drug.
Certain drugs can interact with Nimotop and hence, mention clearly to your doctor or pharmacist all medicines, dietary supplements and herbal prescriptions that you are taking.
Nimotop should be used with extreme caution in children as the safety and effectiveness of the drug have not been confirmed yet.
Ensure that you inform your doctor and your dentist about Nimotop before receiving any form of medical treatment or dental treatment or emergency surgery.
Periodic lab tests including blood pressure may be recommended to monitor your health while taking the drug. Ensure that you do not miss any lab tests.
It has been noted that elderly patients are more sensitive to the side effects of the drug. They might need a dosage adjustment or special monitoring throughout the treatment.
Side effects
Nausea, stomach upset, diarrhea, headache, slow pulse may occur in the first few days while your body adjusts to the medication. If any of these effects remain or become frequent, tell your doctor about it.
Consult your doctor if you seem to have: depression, mood changes, skin rash, swelling of hands or feet, shortness of breath, wheezing, muscle cramps, unusual bruising or bleeding. If you notice other diseases, which are not listed above, contact your doctor.
